Peru is one of the most privileged countries of the planet, since jointly with the Andean countries we concentrate 25 % of biodiversity; also, we are a country ethnic, multicultural and multilingual, for it makes to him necessary that to these characteristics a value of recognition is assigned to them in all the levels of our Peruvian society. Our intention is to associate our biodiversity with the traditional proper knowledge, to achieve an intercultural dialogue with other - in order to live harmonically - and to inter-gesticulate with the different cultures and world views, which gave priority to the mutual respect, the justice and the equality; managing this way, to build a society based on the beginning of democracy, equity and citizenship.

"Indigenous Peoples and Sustainable Development", is a pilot project, that has been executed thanks to the agreement signed between the University of Saskatchewan of Canada and the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos; in order to form future professional leaders, proceeding from the different indigenous communities of the Amazon of our country; those who, on having reached their university studies, will return to their communities and will propitiate the recovery and conservation of their natural resources, by means of their ancestral knowledge; promoting the sustainable development of their regions.

One of the principal lines of action of our project, is to create conscience in our students on the importance of being future leaders compromised with their communities, for which, the project has seen necessary to increase the self-esteem and cultural identity of the young students, through seminars, attitudinal and leadership workshops and that we have been performing during the present year offered to a group of first level professionals. With it, we achieve the integral training of our students, facilitating the cultural exchange, their assertiveness and the exercise of their duties and rights, as well as the development of values of professional ethics and solidarity. It is necessary to highlight that these activities have spread the university community, the professors and representatives of the different public and private institutions of the country.

In this first edition we try to share our work experiences with the benefited students, announcing the principal targets of this project; likewise, to spread topics of transcendental national importance, referred to biodiversity associated with indigenous knowledge and with the sustainable development; through multidisciplinary articles of professional experts with wide trajectory in the matter.

The Magazine “Indigenous Peoples and Sustainable Development“ tries to come to leadership been interested in the situation of the indigenous peoples and their environment. Also, the debate offers the opportunity of starting on the reflections about the reality of the indigenous peoples of Peru and on the application of skills of sustainable development in our country and in other Latin-American nations.

We are grateful to the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos and to Indigenous Peoples Partnership Program of the Canadian Agency for the International Development of the University of Saskatchewan of Canada, who makes possible the execution of this project and the present edition.
